On November 5th, 2020, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) and the San Francisco Unified School District marked the completion of two new green infrastructure projects at Lafayette Elementary School and Bessie Carmichael Middle School. The projects involved introducing bioretention planters and landscape redesigns, as well as additional greenspace to expand play areas for students while improved absorption and collection of rainwater.
The two projects, with a total investment of $900,000+, were among the first projects funded by the SFPUC’s Green Infrastructure Grant Program activated last year to fund both public and private projects that improve the management of stormwater runoff. Green infrastructure is a crucial element of the SFPUC’s Sewer System Improvement Program – a 20-year citywide investment to improve and upgrade the City sewer system.
