If You Chase Two Rabbits, Both Will Escape

Dec 18, 2025 | Leaders, Programs

This anonymous quote emphasizes the importance of focusing on one goal at a time, reminding us that trying to prioritize multiple things simultaneously is a recipe for failure. It has particular relevance for the Exchange today. Let me explain.

While there are many things we have to do as an organization, nothing is more important than delivering quality programming that supports members in their roles as GSI professionals. Our recently updated strategic plan gives that message some teeth, containing strategies to diversify programming, survey members biannually about their needs, offer CEUs for as much programming as possible, and expand regional roundtables and learning circles.  There is nearly $75,000 in the 2026 budget to support these initiatives and additional resources to expand the education team.

The really “new” news is that we are hiring a new staff member to lead that team. In the wake of Veronica Hotton having left the organization recently, we have hired DRG Talent Consultants to assist us finding a new Education Manager.  For me, important attributes of a new hire include familiarity with meeting the education and training needs of a cross-sector community of practice like ours, the ability and experience to develop a diverse programming mix that is accessible to busy professionals and comes with CEUs, and great interpersonal skills that place a premium on listening and getting to know the wants and needs of our members.

Those are my ideas. We’d love to know yours. We’d also love to hear from anyone in the community who might be interested in applying. Share your feedback with our consultant, Sterling Nelson, at snelson@drgtalent.com. A job description will follow shortly.

Our priority now and for the future is developing and offering programming that meets member needs.  It doesn’t mean we won’t simultaneously take on other tasks; it does mean, however, that our human and monetary resources will be focused primarily on chasing only that rabbit.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish you the happiest of holiday seasons!
